All types of surgery have possible side effects, some more bothersome than others. In weight loss surgery’s case, which involves a drastic change to your metabolism and digestive tract, some side effects are expected but can be managed with proper supplementation, nutritional care, healthy habit development, plus a bit of rest and patience. Everybody is different, but generally, these tips will help you minimize discomfort and allow you to continue having a happy and trouble-free weight loss journey. Let’s start!
Gas Pain
More of a feeling of discomfort than pain, this side effect is common after waking up from surgery. Gas is used to inflate your abdomen during surgery to allow room for the surgeon to operate and some of it might still be stuck in your body after you wake up. What can you do to alleviate this? Walking! As simple as that. This will get the gas moving and out of your body and you will feel better in no time.
Fatigue
This is the most common symptom after bariatric surgery due to the decreased calorie intake. This tiredness should wear off after 1 or 2 months, meanwhile keep following your nutritionist’s instructions so your body receives proper nourishment and can regain its vitality sooner rather than later.
Nausea and Vomiting
Although normal symptoms, please pay attention to their onset and identify the reason to avoid discomfort in the future. Slow down during meal times and chew properly. Also take very small sips of water throughout the day. This can also be a sign that you progressed stages of your post-op diet too quickly! If this is the case, try to remain on the previous stage for 3 to 5 more days.
Reflux
This symptom can be avoided by sitting up straight during meal times and not laying down immediately after. Wait at least 30 minutes before laying down.
Dizziness
Adequate hydration is necessary to avoid dizziness after surgery, as well as proper supplementation and appropriate caloric intake depending on your needs and tolerance.
Dumping Syndrome
This happens when your intestine gets a load of carbs and simple sugars! It may cause unwanted symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, sweating, tachycardia, etc. And we want none of that! Make sure to get enough protein in your diet and stay clear of high sugar intakes to avoid Dumping Syndrome.
Constipation
The absence of the need to defecate during your first weeks post-op is common! Remember that your post-op diet is based fully on liquids for two weeks and stools might not form in your intestine. Don’t worry! Normal digestive habits should return after week three when you introduce purees into your diet.
Diarrhea
No one wants to be glued to their toilet bowl for hours! To avoid diarrhea caused by post-op broad spectrum antibiotics, take some probiotics prior and after surgery, our nutritionists can recommend some great options for you!
Hair Loss
We understand why this is something all patients worry about. Fortunately, it doesn’t happen to everyone, but when it does, it is a temporary issue that can be managed with proper supplementation. Make sure you are taking all your multivitamins and nurturing yourself properly with guidance from our nutrition department.
Lactose Intolerance
This very common, very annoying symptom is caused by changes in bacterial flora after your surgery. Try some lactobacilli supplements!
Remember that these symptoms are common and temporary while your metabolism adjusts and your body gets used to your new eating habits! If symptoms are persistent or are interfering with your daily life, please contact our team of experts, we are always available and happy to help!
