When thinking about burning calories our mind immediately goes to working out at the gym, hiking, jogging, practicing a sport. But does it ever acknowledge the many different types of tasks that contribute to our daily physical activity? These are called Non-exercise Activity Thermogenesis, or NEAT activities for short.
These include all activities outside your daily workout routine that help you burn calories including daily chores like vacuuming, gardening, or cooking. As a bariatric patient, being conscious of these activities will help you make better choices.

Here are four ideas to help you increase your NEAT activity after Gastric Sleeve Surgery:
Take the stairs. Taking the stairs requires 8-9 times more energy than taking the elevator. If it’s within your abilities, always choose the stairs for a quick cardio exercise.
Shop for groceries in person. Services like Amazon, Blue Apron, etc. had made it easy for food to be delivered right to your door. But this is a wasted opportunity to get more steps in by walking down the aisles of a grocery store. If you’re able to, you can also carry your grocery bags home or to your car for an extra strength exercise.
Pace while talking on the phone. This is especially great when taking long phone calls, you won’t even notice the large amount of steps you can get in while enjoying a nice conversation with a friend!
Dance while cleaning the house. When doing household chores, turn on the music and dance! Not only will that burn many calories but it will make cleaning so much more enjoyable.
Park further away. While parking next to the store is convenient, don’t underestimate the benefits of the quick walk that comes from parking at the farther end of the lot. Every step counts!
Stretch while sitting. Whether you’re watching TV or sitting at your work desk, stretching your legs and your shoulders can help you keep active.
Bariatric patients can benefit greatly from these types of activities during their post-op recovery and can begin to develop them as good habits. Of course, NEAT activities must always be complemented by a safe workout routine and a healthy diet. Remember to listen to your body and stop any activity that causes pain or discomfort. Have a happy and successful weight loss!
