Food intake restriction is one of the main reasons why weight loss surgery is such a powerful tool. However, because bariatric patients will be reducing the amount of food they eat after surgery, they are at risk of suffering from nutritional deficiencies. This is why supplementation is key for a healthy recovery and a successful weight loss journey.

Due to the large variety of supplements and vitamins available on the market, choosing one can sometimes be overwhelming. Don’t worry! Diabetes Obesity Clinic’s Quick Guide for Supplementation will make it easy to identify what you need in this new and very exciting stage in your life.

For starters, what will you need?

Multivitamin

Calcium

Biotin

These supplements come in capsule, powder, liquid, patch, or tablet form. Although any of these presentations are good for your body, powder, liquid, and patch supplements are recommended for bariatric patients to avoid problems while swallowing.

Choosing your multivitamin

When looking for your ideal multivitamin, make sure you read the label. You should be looking for a brand that includes a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals, especially Iron (at least 18mg) , Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, and Zinc.

Next is calcium

Calcium will take care of your bones. Be sure to take at least 1500 mg per day. Depending on the brand, you will be able to split that 1500 mg in two or three doses, so you can spread your calcium intake throughout the day.

Last but not least, biotin

Biotin is an excellent supplement that can be added to your post-operative diet. It will help prevent an excessive loss of hair (remember: mild hair loss is a normal, temporary part of weight loss surgery). However, this is totally optional. Biotin is naturally found in liver, eggs, fish, meat, nuts, seeds and vegetables. If you follow your diet correctly, you shouldn’t worry too much about Biotin deficiency.

Failing to supplement after bariatric surgeries can cause nutritional problems that will lead to fatigue, headaches, fuzzy memory, dizziness, loss of hair, brittle nails, and general unwellness. We want patients to have a speedy recovery and the best post-op experience possible, that is why we stress the importance of including these supplements in your daily routine.

Furthermore, nothing will keep you better nourished than following your post-op diet according to your guide and nutritionist’s instructions. We aim for you to be getting most of your nutrients from food once you reach the 5th stage of your post-op diet. Supplements and vitamins will remain as a helpful tool in your daily schedule after that.

Remember that our nutrition department is available to all patients who need advice or help. If you have questions about a supplement brand and would like to verify that it’s a good option for you, don’t hesitate to contact us and schedule an appointment or phone call!

Every weight loss surgery is a process that starts before you arrive at the hospital and continues long after you leave. The first step towards a healthy, happy weight loss is preparing properly for surgery. This starts with a healthy, personalized diet prescribed by your nutritionist. Although this diet might help you lose a pound or two, its objective is to help you prepare your body so it’s in optimal conditions for surgery.

After that comes the liquid diet, which you are required to follow for 3 days before your surgery. This allows you to replenish fluids, reduce swelling on your liver, and most importantly, remove all traces of food in your digestive system. Cheating during this diet can affect your process. Surgery needs to be performed on a clean stomach to avoid complications or infections. Make sure that you tell your doctor if you cheated during your diet as you might have to reschedule your surgery. Think of the pre-op liquid diet as a short-term sacrifice for a long-term gain. Is cheating on this diet really worth postponing my surgery? Take this time to work on breaking bad habits, but also to determine if you’re ready to withstand the changes and challenges that come with weight loss surgery. Your pre-op diet is your first stepping stone

Once you have your gastric sleeve done and are ready to continue your recovery at home, you leave the facilities with a set of instructions that will help make your weight loss the safest and most effective experience possible. One of these steps is following a liquid diet for approximately two weeks after surgery where you will be required to drink at least 64 ounces (2 liters) of clear, non-carbonated, and sugar‐free liquids per day. This will help and keep you hydrated and allow your stomach to heal correctly. Not following this liquid diet correctly can cause an upset stomach a lot of unwanted discomfort.

Remember that after surgery, your stomach capacity has been significantly reduced so cravings and temptation are also minimal or non-existent. Learn to listen to your body and interpret its needs because sometimes other feelings can be mistaken for hunger, like boredom, anxiety and even thirst. It’s normal for patients to be intimidated at the thought of an all-liquid diet, but trust us when we say that it’s worth it and easier than you think, with help of your doctors and nutritionists you will be able to successfully overcome both stages and eat solid food in no time.

Making small adjustments in your everyday post-weight loss surgery life can help you overcome bad habits and start developing healthier ones. There are many things you can do to help your mind and body get used to smaller portions and learn how much to eat in order to nurture your body. Here are some options to get you started:

Always use see-through containers.

Out of sight, out of mind. Not being able to see what you’re eating makes it easy to avoid portion control. This happens a lot when, for example, you are eating directly from a bag of chips. You might not notice how much you ate until you have reached the bottom of the bag. Measuring and separating your food and snack portions into containers is a great way to plan your meals and keep track of how much you’re eating.

Small plates.

Patients might be used to eating large servings before their weight loss surgery and might feel a little uncomfortable and anxious when there is a sudden decrease in their portion sizes. A great way to ease yourself into smaller portions is buying and eating off smaller plates. When the same amount of food is placed in a big plate and a small plate, our brain immediately registers that the smaller plate contains more food.

Choose the color of your plates wisely.

Do you know why McDonald’s uses red and yellow as their company colors? It’s because bright colors trigger your appetite! Invest in grey, purple, or blue plates so the higher contrast helps your brain regulate your appetite thus controlling your food intake. Plus, people say food tends to look bigger on a dark colored plate as opposed to a white plate.

Mindful snacking.

Weight loss surgery patients need to be extremely in touch with their bodies and their response to hunger. Sometimes we snack when we are stressed, anxious, or even bored, not because we are hungry. When you get the urge to snack, take a moment to assess if your body is asking you for food or for a quick break.

Sleep

Make late night snacks a thing of the past. Lack of sleep might affect your appetite and make you crave high-calorie foods. It will also cause lack of energy, which is essential for bariatric patients that need to follow their exercise routine.

Type 2 Diabetes

More than 87% of adults with diabetes are overweight or obese. It isn’t clear why people who are overweight are more likely to develop this disease. It may be that being overweight causes cells to change, making them resistant to the hormone insulin. Insulin carries sugar from blood to the cells, where it is used for energy.

Cancer:

Gaining weight as an adult increases the risk for several cancers, even if the weight gain doesn’t result in overweight or obesity. It isn’t known exactly how being overweight increases the risk of cancer. Fat cells may release hormones that affect cell growth, leading to cancer. Also, eating or physical activity habits that may lead to being overweight may also contribute to cancer risk.

It is possible that risks of bariatric surgery are lower for teens than adults because obesity has had fewer decades to damage vital organ systems in the body. Which shows that weight loss surgery is for everyone. Teens with type 2 diabetes before surgery were more likely than adults to have better blood glucose (blood sugar) control without the use of diabetes medications.
When you are on a new path for a healthier lifestyle there are some simple steps that can make a difference.
By eating slow, you digest food better, so it will be easier to lose or maintain your weight, your body will be better hydrate, and you’ll have greater satisfaction with your meals. On the other hand, eating quickly leads to poor digestion, lower satisfaction, and increased weight gain. That’s why the message is clear: Slow down your eating, enjoy your food and improve health and well-being.

Think of every time you are on a rush over a meal and barely sit down. In this sense, meals are a stressing time for busy people making them eventually eat more. Finishing your meal before your natural satiety kicks in, and suddenly ending up makes people feel uncomfortable and overstuffed.

A key factor of eating slowly is that it gives your body time to realize that you are satisfied and for that consider that it takes about twenty minutes from the moment that you start a meal for the brain to send signals of satiety.
The result is simple; when eating fast you are not allowing your body time to register that is does not longer requires food and the effect is to add extra calories on your food and eventually extra pounds on your weight.
Eating slowly seems to decrease hunger and leads to higher levels of satiety between meals.

Some helpful tips
Sit down to eat in a calm environment with minimal distractions. Don’t eat while driving, watching TV, texting, etc. Pay attention to your food not only in flavors but in quantity.
Choose high-fiber foods that take more time to chew, such as fresh fruits and vegetables.
Put down your utensils between bites. Take a moment. Breathe. If you’re eating with other people, enjoy the conversation for a few minutes.
Try setting a minimum number of chews per bite. This will feel strange at first, but give it a try and see what you discover.
Use smaller plates. This obviously reduces the intake of food each meal.

If you find yourself rushing, that’s OK. Put your utensils down and take a minute to re-focus. If slow eating isn’t habitual for you, this will take time to adjust.
Find another slow eater and pace yourselves to them.
Set aside time to eat– at least 20-30 minutes for each meal, and preferably even longer at dinner. You’re fueling your body and maybe spending quality time with friends and family. That’s important. It deserves an appointment.
