Bariatric surgery serves as a powerful weight loss solution for people who have struggled with challenges in shedding and sustaining a healthy weight, despite exhaustive attempts with pills, exercise, and diets. Typically, patients undergoing bariatric procedures experience a remarkable loss of 100% of their excess weight, accompanied by substantial improvement in mobility, self-esteem, and obesity-related health conditions such as type II diabetes and high blood pressure.

Yet, what happens when the desired outcomes aren’t achieved? What if, several years post-surgery, weight regain occurs? And what if obesity-related health conditions persist? Does this mean the end of weight loss possibilities?

Absolutely not! There remain excellent options for individuals who have undergone bariatric procedures to continue in their journey towards their weight loss goals. Enter revision surgery – a transformative option that opens up new avenues for progress and success.

Revision surgery is a follow-up or secondary procedure for patients who have previously had weight loss surgery but have not achieved their desired goals. Unfortunately, a lot of patients who’ve had bariatric surgery decide against going for revision surgery, even when it could really help, all because of the stigma around it. It is so important to emphasize that choosing to undergo revision surgery does not equal personal failure or being an inadequate patient. It’s all about recognizing that sometimes, we just need a little extra support to reach our health goals. Think of revision surgery as an opportunity for extra assistance and a continued commitment to your well-being journey.

That said, when should a patient consider revision surgery?

Goal weight: You have not reached your goal weight or have experienced weight regain after your initial procedure.

Side effects: It might be worth thinking about revision surgery if the side effects from your first bariatric procedure, like bothersome acid reflux, are getting in the way of your daily life.

Persistent health conditions: Despite the initial surgery, certain obesity-related health conditions, such as type II diabetes or high blood pressure, may persist.

Lifestyle: Changes in lifestyle, including diet and exercise habits, or personal circumstances, may impact the success of the initial bariatric surgery and prompt the need for revision.

Psychological Factors: Some individuals may struggle with emotional or psychological aspects of weight management, leading to challenges in adhering to the initial surgical outcomes.

At the end of the day, revision surgery is all about tackling any issues and giving you the chance to enhance or bring back your first procedure’s effectiveness. The decision to go for revision surgery is made after careful consideration by healthcare professionals. They evaluate your medical history, your current health status, and any specific challenges you’ve faced since your first bariatric procedure. It’s all about making sure you’re on the right path to your healthiest, happiest self! Let’s eliminate the stigma around revision surgery once and for all!

If you have been considering revision surgery to boost a previous bariatric procedure and continue on your path towards your weight loss goals, contact our team of certified experts for a FREE medical evaluation.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when our body isn’t able to regulate and process the sugar we get from food, resulting in high blood sugar levels. This type of diabetes is normally known as adult-onset diabetes because it can develop later in life due not only to genes but lifestyle factors like low inactivity and obesity, which in itself triggers insulin resistance.

Once you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, your doctor will start a treatment plan which will sometimes include medications to manage the symptoms. Type 2 diabetes is not curable but it can go into remission to the point you will not need medication. However, patients will need to make significant lifestyle changes to achieve this, which sometimes requires a little help. This is where weight loss surgery comes into play.

Weight loss surgery is a powerful tool that will help patients develop those desired habits and be well on their way towards long-term remission. When receiving bariatric treatment with Diabetes Obesity Clinic, your food intake is considerably reduced and will be carefully monitored by a team of experts to not only promote the much needed weight loss but also make sure you are properly nourished and your body’s nutritional needs are met.

Weight loss surgery also makes it easier to start an exercise routine! By shedding the excess weight, pressure on your joints will lessen and make it easier (and less painful) for you to keep active throughout your day.

Up to 80% of bariatric patients report achieving Type 2 Diabetes remission 2 years after their surgery (Source: National Library of Medicine). This is proof that, even after being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, you can live a long, healthy life!

If you suffer from Type 2 Diabetes or any of the following obesity-related conditions: high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep apnea, joint pain, etc. and you would like to know if weight loss surgery is an option for you, don’t hesitate to contact us!

All types of surgery have possible side effects, some more bothersome than others. In weight loss surgery’s case, which involves a drastic change to your metabolism and digestive tract, some side effects are expected but can be managed with proper supplementation, nutritional care, healthy habit development, plus a bit of rest and patience. Everybody is different, but generally, these tips will help you minimize discomfort and allow you to continue having a happy and trouble-free weight loss journey. Let’s start!

Gas Pain

More of a feeling of discomfort than pain, this side effect is common after waking up from surgery. Gas is used to inflate your abdomen during surgery to allow room for the surgeon to operate and some of it might still be stuck in your body after you wake up. What can you do to alleviate this? Walking! As simple as that. This will get the gas moving and out of your body and you will feel better in no time.

Fatigue

This is the most common symptom after bariatric surgery due to the decreased calorie intake. This tiredness should wear off after 1 or 2 months, meanwhile keep following your nutritionist’s instructions so your body receives proper nourishment and can regain its vitality sooner rather than later.

Nausea and Vomiting

Although normal symptoms, please pay attention to their onset and identify the reason to avoid discomfort in the future. Slow down during meal times and chew properly. Also take very small sips of water throughout the day. This can also be a sign that you progressed stages of your post-op diet too quickly! If this is the case, try to remain on the previous stage for 3 to 5 more days.

Reflux

This symptom can be avoided by sitting up straight during meal times and not laying down immediately after. Wait at least 30 minutes before laying down.

Dizziness

Adequate hydration is necessary to avoid dizziness after surgery, as well as proper supplementation and appropriate caloric intake depending on your needs and tolerance.

Dumping Syndrome

This happens when your intestine gets a load of carbs and simple sugars! It may cause unwanted symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, sweating, tachycardia, etc. And we want none of that! Make sure to get enough protein in your diet and stay clear of high sugar intakes to avoid Dumping Syndrome.

Constipation

The absence of the need to defecate during your first weeks post-op is common! Remember that your post-op diet is based fully on liquids for two weeks and stools might not form in your intestine. Don’t worry! Normal digestive habits should return after week three when you introduce purees into your diet.

Diarrhea

No one wants to be glued to their toilet bowl for hours! To avoid diarrhea caused by post-op broad spectrum antibiotics, take some probiotics prior and after surgery, our nutritionists can recommend some great options for you!

Hair Loss

We understand why this is something all patients worry about. Fortunately, it doesn’t happen to everyone, but when it does, it is a temporary issue that can be managed with proper supplementation. Make sure you are taking all your multivitamins and nurturing yourself properly with guidance from our nutrition department.

Lactose Intolerance

This very common, very annoying symptom is caused by changes in bacterial flora after your surgery. Try some lactobacilli supplements!

Remember that these symptoms are common and temporary while your metabolism adjusts and your body gets used to your new eating habits! If symptoms are persistent or are interfering with your daily life, please contact our team of experts, we are always available and happy to help!

Whether they are good or bad, eating habits reflect greatly on your weight loss journey after bariatric surgery. Good habits keep your body energized and your weight on a stable and healthy decline towards your goal. Bad habits can cause discomfort and, unfortunately, weight regain. So why not focus on developing good ones for a positive impact and getting rid of the bad ones that hold you back? Today we will show you the bariatric patient’s 9 golden rules to get rid of unhealthy eating habits!

Treat mealtime as an experience, not a chore.

When it’s time to eat, make sure you sit down and take your time to savor and enjoy your meal. Avoid distracting yourself with phones, TV, or work. You have to be very aware of your body during meal times. Remember that it takes around 20 minutes for your brain to register that you’re full, so chew your food slowly and thoroughly so you can identify your body’s cues that will tell you that time to stop. Thanks to this, it’s easy to avoid overeating.

The famous 30/30 rule

This rule is used to avoid mixing your liquids with your meals. Make sure to drink your liquids 30 minutes before your meal and wait 30 minutes after you’re done until you have another drink. This will allow your body to correctly absorb the nutrients from your food and will help you avoid stomach discomfort.

Snack hack

Eat any and all snacks from see through containers, not directly from the bag. Not being able to see what you’re eating makes it easy to forget about portion control. This happens a lot when, for example, you are eating directly from a bag of chips. You might not notice how much you ate until you have reached the bottom of the bag. Measuring and separating your food and snack portions into containers is a great way to plan your meals and keep track of how much you’re eating.

Keep a food journal

Pick one that is easy to carry around and write down what you ate in a day! Seeing how you’ve progressed since you started losing weight and how your food choices keep getting better and better will help keep you on the healthy path. If you’re more tech-inclined, you can also use one of the many bariatric apps to keep yourself on track.

Don’t skip meals

Skipping meals is a big no. Not only does it mess up your metabolism, which can make losing weight more difficult, but it can cause lack of energy. Your body needs fuel! Skipping meals can also result in headaches, trouble focusing, and even unhealthy cravings or binges on food your body doesn’t need. Eat small, frequent, high-protein meals. A full tummy means a happy heart.

Plan your meals

Following a meal plan makes things easier and healthier. Knowing just what to buy when going to the store and knowing exactly what you’ll cook each day helps with portion control, saves time in the kitchen, and it also saves you money!

Read labels

Learning how to read the labels on the products you eat and making it a habit will help you make better choices about what kind of food you are putting into your body. It can help you limit the amount of sodium, sugars, and carbs in favor of choosing nutrient dense and protein-rich products.

Avoid processed food

This one might be a bit obvious, but needs to be said. Food that is frozen, canned or dried will most of the contain high levels of salt, saturated fat, or sugar. Always chose to prepare healthy meals at home using fresh, whole ingredients.

Fill your meal with colors

While on your normal Bariatric Diet, adding color to your meals is a great way to know that you’re getting your daily doses of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Add a wide variety of greens, reds, yellows, blues, and purples by adding fruits and vegetables to your meals to make them colorful and visually appealing!

Eating should not be a source of anxiety or frustration. Remember that it takes around 60 days for a new behavior to become automatic. By applying these tips one day at a time, you can learn to improve your habits in no time at all!

If you have any questions about the advice given above or you want to share some tips of your own, don’t hesitate to contact our team! We will be more than happy to hear from you!

What is normal and what is not after weight loss surgery?

Do you find yourself being hyper-aware of your body after weight loss surgery? Most patients can be a bit anxious to know if what they’re experiencing is normal or if it warrants a trip to their healthcare provider. It’s totally okay, worrying is an understandable response to all the new things you are feeling and the changes happening to your body.

We want to help you put your mind at ease and show you what things are just a common occurrence during your weight loss journey and which signs and symptoms you should keep an eye out for. Let’s start!

Brittle nails and hair loss

Totally normal, but temporary. Because of the restrictive diet that you have to follow after undergoing weight loss surgery, you might notice that your nails are a little dry and that your hairbrush is pulling out a bit of extra hair from your head. This can be managed with proper supplementation during your first few weeks after surgery while you transition into a normal bariatric diet. If you are still experiencing excessive hair loss and brittle nails well into your weight loss process, it might be a sign of low protein and low calorie intake or an improper adherence to your post-op diet plan.

Fatigue

Feeling tired is one of the most common side effects during the first few months after weight loss surgery. This symptom can last for up to 2 months and it is caused by your body’s decreased calorie intake, which the body needs to transform into energy. Don’t worry too much about feeling tired early in the morning or needing an extra nap during the day, as soon as you transition into a normal bariatric diet you will feel energized and revitalized!

Reflux

Although very annoying and sometimes painful, this is a very common symptom. The good news is: it’s easily preventable! It’s as easy as sitting up straight while eating and avoiding laying down immediately after. Think of your stomach as a funnel. If you pack the funnel full and dont wait until the contents have dropped out the small opening, the contents will spill over if you set it sideways! It also helps to slow down while you eat, chew your food properly, and avoid drinking any liquids with your food.

Dehydration

We don’t mean to alarm you, but dehydration can result in a serious problem. Bariatric patients are at high risk of dehydration and need to pay close attention to their liquid intake. Small and constant sips are key to a well-hydrated body! If you don’t get adequate fluids you might start feeling lightheaded and can experience dry skin, dry mouth, and even constipation, so much so that you might need to seek medical attention. Remember, water is great but it isn’t the only thing you can drink! Non-fizzy, non-alcoholic drinks are also your friends during your weight loss journey. Try energy drinks, juices, and even water-based popsicles!

Diarrhea or Constipation

Oh boy, diarrhea and constipation are both very real, very unpleasant symptoms to say the least. Remember that weight loss surgery affects all of your digestive habits and this may come in the form of weird bowel movements. Constipation is normal during the first few weeks after surgery because you are not eating any solid food that can be transformed into stools. You should not worry about that unless the problem persists after starting your post-op diet’s solid phases, if so, your nutritionist can give you instructions to deal with this problem. Diarrhea, on the other hand, can be common even after you start your solid diet. It can happen due to your new digestive habits or it can be a way for your body to tell you that you’re ingesting too much fiber, sugars or carbohydrates. Or maybe you just discovered a new post-op intolerance, like lactose! Either way, your nutritionist can also help you overcome this problem.

Vomiting and nausea

This is normal during the first days after surgery and can be set off by drinking or eating too quickly. Take care of your portion sizes too! We know that seeing such small portions on your plate can be anxiety-inducing but trust us when we say your body will thank you for taking it easy. Don’t push yourself into finishing your portions if you feel like you have reached your limit so your body won’t reject it, you need all the nutrition you can get! Also, if you’re starting your solid diet, make sure to chew everything properly to avoid these types of discomfort.

Gas pain

Did you wonder why we tell patients to walk, walk, walk, as soon as the surgery’s anesthesia wears off? It’s not because we’re mean, it’s because this is the best way to get rid of the gas inside your body. The gas we’re talking about is CO2, which is used to inflate your abdomen and make room for the doctor to perform the surgery. While this gas is mostly absorbed by your body, any leftover gas can cause a mild uncomfortable sensation. Walking will take care of that, no problem! Also, bringing along some GasX won’t hurt!

Extreme pain

Not normal at all. Any “pain” you could experience after weight loss surgery should be around the likes of uncomfortable or a feeling of fullness. If the pain you feel prevents you from standing up or moving, it’s time to contact your doctor ASAP.

Keeping this in mind, you are free to call and ask our team and ask any questions you may have about any of the above symptoms, no matter how small. It’s always better to have some professional reassurance that everything is okay than being constantly anxious about something being wrong. We are here to help and guide you through this wonderful journey, and that includes giving you peace of mind!

If you would like to schedule a consultation with our medical team or our bariatric nutritionists, don’t hesitate to contact us!

Food intake restriction is one of the main reasons why weight loss surgery is such a powerful tool. However, because bariatric patients will be reducing the amount of food they eat after surgery, they are at risk of suffering from nutritional deficiencies. This is why supplementation is key for a healthy recovery and a successful weight loss journey.

Due to the large variety of supplements and vitamins available on the market, choosing one can sometimes be overwhelming. Don’t worry! Diabetes Obesity Clinic’s Quick Guide for Supplementation will make it easy to identify what you need in this new and very exciting stage in your life.

For starters, what will you need?

Multivitamin

Calcium

Biotin

These supplements come in capsule, powder, liquid, patch, or tablet form. Although any of these presentations are good for your body, powder, liquid, and patch supplements are recommended for bariatric patients to avoid problems while swallowing.

Choosing your multivitamin

When looking for your ideal multivitamin, make sure you read the label. You should be looking for a brand that includes a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals, especially Iron (at least 18mg) , Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, and Zinc.

Next is calcium

Calcium will take care of your bones. Be sure to take at least 1500 mg per day. Depending on the brand, you will be able to split that 1500 mg in two or three doses, so you can spread your calcium intake throughout the day.

Last but not least, biotin

Biotin is an excellent supplement that can be added to your post-operative diet. It will help prevent an excessive loss of hair (remember: mild hair loss is a normal, temporary part of weight loss surgery). However, this is totally optional. Biotin is naturally found in liver, eggs, fish, meat, nuts, seeds and vegetables. If you follow your diet correctly, you shouldn’t worry too much about Biotin deficiency.

Failing to supplement after bariatric surgeries can cause nutritional problems that will lead to fatigue, headaches, fuzzy memory, dizziness, loss of hair, brittle nails, and general unwellness. We want patients to have a speedy recovery and the best post-op experience possible, that is why we stress the importance of including these supplements in your daily routine.

Furthermore, nothing will keep you better nourished than following your post-op diet according to your guide and nutritionist’s instructions. We aim for you to be getting most of your nutrients from food once you reach the 5th stage of your post-op diet. Supplements and vitamins will remain as a helpful tool in your daily schedule after that.

Remember that our nutrition department is available to all patients who need advice or help. If you have questions about a supplement brand and would like to verify that it’s a good option for you, don’t hesitate to contact us and schedule an appointment or phone call!

When thinking about burning calories our mind immediately goes to working out at the gym, hiking, jogging, practicing a sport. But does it ever acknowledge the many different types of tasks that contribute to our daily physical activity? These are called Non-exercise Activity Thermogenesis, or NEAT activities for short.

These include all activities outside your daily workout routine that help you burn calories including daily chores like vacuuming, gardening, or cooking. As a bariatric patient, being conscious of these activities will help you make better choices.

Here are four ideas to help you increase your NEAT activity after Gastric Sleeve Surgery:

Take the stairs. Taking the stairs requires 8-9 times more energy than taking the elevator. If it’s within your abilities, always choose the stairs for a quick cardio exercise.

Shop for groceries in person. Services like Amazon, Blue Apron, etc. had made it easy for food to be delivered right to your door. But this is a wasted opportunity to get more steps in by walking down the aisles of a grocery store. If you’re able to, you can also carry your grocery bags home or to your car for an extra strength exercise.

Pace while talking on the phone. This is especially great when taking long phone calls, you won’t even notice the large amount of steps you can get in while enjoying a nice conversation with a friend!

Dance while cleaning the house. When doing household chores, turn on the music and dance! Not only will that burn many calories but it will make cleaning so much more enjoyable.

Park further away. While parking next to the store is convenient, don’t underestimate the benefits of the quick walk that comes from parking at the farther end of the lot. Every step counts!

Stretch while sitting. Whether you’re watching TV or sitting at your work desk, stretching your legs and your shoulders can help you keep active.

Bariatric patients can benefit greatly from these types of activities during their post-op recovery and can begin to develop them as good habits. Of course, NEAT activities must always be complemented by a safe workout routine and a healthy diet. Remember to listen to your body and stop any activity that causes pain or discomfort. Have a happy and successful weight loss!

If losing your excess weight is one of your goals, our team can help! Get in contact with our team and patient coordinators to determine if Gastric Sleeve Surgery is an option for you:

Every weight loss surgery is a process that starts before you arrive at the hospital and continues long after you leave. The first step towards a healthy, happy weight loss is preparing properly for surgery. This starts with a healthy, personalized diet prescribed by your nutritionist. Although this diet might help you lose a pound or two, its objective is to help you prepare your body so it’s in optimal conditions for surgery.

After that comes the liquid diet, which you are required to follow for 3 days before your surgery. This allows you to replenish fluids, reduce swelling on your liver, and most importantly, remove all traces of food in your digestive system. Cheating during this diet can affect your process. Surgery needs to be performed on a clean stomach to avoid complications or infections. Make sure that you tell your doctor if you cheated during your diet as you might have to reschedule your surgery. Think of the pre-op liquid diet as a short-term sacrifice for a long-term gain. Is cheating on this diet really worth postponing my surgery? Take this time to work on breaking bad habits, but also to determine if you’re ready to withstand the changes and challenges that come with weight loss surgery. Your pre-op diet is your first stepping stone

Once you have your gastric sleeve done and are ready to continue your recovery at home, you leave the facilities with a set of instructions that will help make your weight loss the safest and most effective experience possible. One of these steps is following a liquid diet for approximately two weeks after surgery where you will be required to drink at least 64 ounces (2 liters) of clear, non-carbonated, and sugar‐free liquids per day. This will help and keep you hydrated and allow your stomach to heal correctly. Not following this liquid diet correctly can cause an upset stomach a lot of unwanted discomfort.

Remember that after surgery, your stomach capacity has been significantly reduced so cravings and temptation are also minimal or non-existent. Learn to listen to your body and interpret its needs because sometimes other feelings can be mistaken for hunger, like boredom, anxiety and even thirst. It’s normal for patients to be intimidated at the thought of an all-liquid diet, but trust us when we say that it’s worth it and easier than you think, with help of your doctors and nutritionists you will be able to successfully overcome both stages and eat solid food in no time.

Making small adjustments in your everyday post-weight loss surgery life can help you overcome bad habits and start developing healthier ones. There are many things you can do to help your mind and body get used to smaller portions and learn how much to eat in order to nurture your body. Here are some options to get you started:

Always use see-through containers.

Out of sight, out of mind. Not being able to see what you’re eating makes it easy to avoid portion control. This happens a lot when, for example, you are eating directly from a bag of chips. You might not notice how much you ate until you have reached the bottom of the bag. Measuring and separating your food and snack portions into containers is a great way to plan your meals and keep track of how much you’re eating.

Small plates.

Patients might be used to eating large servings before their weight loss surgery and might feel a little uncomfortable and anxious when there is a sudden decrease in their portion sizes. A great way to ease yourself into smaller portions is buying and eating off smaller plates. When the same amount of food is placed in a big plate and a small plate, our brain immediately registers that the smaller plate contains more food.

Choose the color of your plates wisely.

Do you know why McDonald’s uses red and yellow as their company colors? It’s because bright colors trigger your appetite! Invest in grey, purple, or blue plates so the higher contrast helps your brain regulate your appetite thus controlling your food intake. Plus, people say food tends to look bigger on a dark colored plate as opposed to a white plate.

Mindful snacking.

Weight loss surgery patients need to be extremely in touch with their bodies and their response to hunger. Sometimes we snack when we are stressed, anxious, or even bored, not because we are hungry. When you get the urge to snack, take a moment to assess if your body is asking you for food or for a quick break.

Sleep

Make late night snacks a thing of the past. Lack of sleep might affect your appetite and make you crave high-calorie foods. It will also cause lack of energy, which is essential for bariatric patients that need to follow their exercise routine.

It takes a while to get used to your new lifestyle but it will soon become second nature. Try these simple ways you can get your mind and body to work together towards a common goal: your health.

We have a couple of ideas that will make very thoughtful and very useful presents.

Cool, large water bottle. If the surgery was recent, consider getting a nice water bottle to hold all stage 1 diet liquids and protein shakes. Adequate hydration is very important for weight loss surgery patients so always having a full water bottle is very handy.

Colorful pill organizer. Hopefully sooner rather than later, any diabetes or blood pressure pills will not be needed and the convenient pill organizer can be used to keep track of vitamins and supplements.

Comfortable running shoes with arch support. After surgery, keeping up an active lifestyle is a must! Having shoes that will lessen the impact on your joints will make exercising so much easier and enjoyable.

Portion control plate. For recent bariatric patients, portion control might be something new. These plates help prepare a complete, nutritious meal by measuring serving sizes to ensure daily intake of each food group.

Meal prep storage containers. Preparing meals and snacks beforehand works wonders for people who have a busy life but want to control their portions. Choose dishwasher/microwave-safe containers and pay close attention to the size you need.

Journal. This is a no-brainer. A fancy new journal is perfect for tracking calorie intake, unloading daily thoughts and feelings, writing down delicious recipes, and having a record of your weight loss journey that you can come back to in the future and realize how much your life has changed.

However, the best present you can give a weight loss patient is love and support. And as a bariatric patient, giving yourself the gift of health and a chance of a new life is the greatest gift of all. Daily goals make all the difference, the items above just help you along the way.
